How (&Why) to Add Author Tags

Is your small business using author tags? If not, it should be and the sooner the better! Social media consultants have long recognized the benefit to paying attention to details that others overlook but author tags are so simple that every small business owner will want to implement this little tip immediately.

What is an Author Tag?

An author tag is exactly what it sounds like; information about the creator of the displayed content. It often includes a small photograph, link and other data which allows users to follow a given author or view other material by the same creator.

How do Author Tags Help Market My Site?

We’re glad you asked! Author tags actually perform several unique functions for FREE (always a popular price tag!). For example, readers can search for a given author and view other materials or similar content with ease. Add in a few pertinent keywords and author tags provide instant search engine visibility. Backlinks to author works can also work in reverse as readers discover other areas of interest based upon readership ratings.

How to Get Started

Adding author tags is quite simple leaving no reason not to begin implementing this tip right away.

1. Picture Perfect Profile. Each author within your organization will need to establish a Google Profile page and upload a recognizable headshot to be used as the profile photograph.

2. Verify Authentic Authorship. Next, each author will be required to verify their name and account either by linking the content to a valid Google Profile (suggested for single author sites) or adding name and email to the content (suggested for sites with multiple authors).

To use the profile option, simply log into the user account, click the “contributor to…” option and add desired websites. Click the “work” box, add contact information and save. Be sure to use a valid email!

For multiple authors, there are two options to link to the content; a snippet of code or create a manual link to the Google profile page. To create your own code snippets visit: http://www.google.com/webmasters/profilebutton/ or, for a manual option, ask your social media consultant how to get started.
